Using merge tags in your campaigns

Merge tags let you personalize your campaigns with a custom greeting or salutation. This will help you take that extra step to increase open rates and send campaigns with a unique personal touch.

Personalizing your campaigns with merge tags

When creating a campaign, go to the Content & Design section. By default, a 1 Column layout will appear in the main content area with a personalized salutation for your campaign recipients: “Dear [givenName, fallback=Subscriber]”. This default salutation can be edited or deleted as needed. The bracketed text after the word ‘Dear’ is known as a merge tag, an item that allows you to deliver personalized emails specific to each of your recipients. Merge tags incorporate recipient information that matches your contacts’ information from the CRM module into your campaign text. Available tags are divided into default and CRM Contact form fields:
Default Tags

  • Email – Will display the contact’s email address
  • Unsubscribe Link – Will display a link that directs to the recipients own unsubscription page
  • Subscription Center Link – Will display a link that directs to the recipients own subscription page

CRM Contact Fields Tags
All existing CRM Contact form fields are available except multiple file upload and single file upload fields. When the CRM Contact’s first and last name has saved in each languages character, the Full Name field will display as below:

  • English: First Name and Last Name
  • Spanish: First Name and Last Name
  • Chinese: Last Name and First Name
  • Russian: Last Name and First Name
  • Korean: Last Name and First Name

Tip: When you create an event notification or invitation, the event registration fields are also available.

If there is no information that matches your selected merge tag in a recipient’s CRM profile, you can define a fallback by inserting a word or input. This word or input will be used if there is no matching CRM entry information. The fallback for the default personalized salutation is ‘Subscriber’. Available fallback inputs can be:

  • Letters
  • Numbers
  • Special characters including . , (space) _ – @ ’

Examples:

Input: “Dear [firstname, fallback=Member], happy to have you join us!”

  • If the First Name field in the CRM entry includes the name ‘Jason’, the email recipient will view:
    • Dear Jason, happy to have you join us!
  • If the First Name field in the CRM entry is empty, the email recipient will view:
    • Dear Member, happy to have you join us!
